Lauder Public Hall Steering Group update File
Public Hall Update to LCC Meeting 12/09/26
The Steering group met on 25th August.
Key points from the meeting:
● Elaine Brotherstone joined the group as LCDT link person
● Three members of the group have compiled a “wish list” of what upgrades are required in the hall.
They are now going to prioritise the list and circulate to the group. The meeting room is an area we have asked to be prioritised to increase income and for use during our Winter Warmers
● Discussions around maintenance responsibilities are ongoing and Sarah Culver is organising a meeting with SBC LIVE Borders and Susan and Anee to discuss further.
● The issue around accurate accounts for 2025-26 is ongoing. Anne produced a timeline of our communications with LIVE Borders on the issue. Susan and Anne have since submitted an email to the chief executive expressing our concerns and copying in our elected representatives.
● A fund-raising quiz night in aid of hall funds will be held on 23rd October.
● Anne has submitted a bid for £5000 to the Neighbourhood fund to buy indoor bowling equipment.
● We are hoping to provide film nights and workshops over the winter.
● Marilyn is progressing funding bids for feasibility studies and condition reports through the LCDT.
Christmas Market
We are organising a Christmas Market as a fundraiser and to showcase the hall. This will take place on the annual shopping night on 6th November and is supported by the traders. All 28 stalls have now been booked out. We will also run a bar on the night.
Winter Warmers
We have received an additional £500 in funding from the Duchess of Northumberland in addition to the £7200 from LAG. We now only need to raise a further £300 to reach our 10% share of the total cost of the project.
We have interviewed for and appointed a coordinator. We are delighted Carol Jeffrey has accepted the post.
We have a team of volunteers to help deliver the sessions
Our programme of speakers and workshops are confirmed up to the end of December.
We have printed posters and leaflets to promote the events which start on 20th October and will run weekly through to March. We are looking for volunteers to help do a letterbox at the end of Sept.

Lauderdale Community Council need you
Lauderdale Community needs you!
Lauderdale Community Council has secured funding to run a series of weekly Winter Warmers on a Tuesday in Lauder Public Hall from October 2026 to March 2027.
The Winter Warmers will provide a warm friendly space for people to come and socialise for 3 hours once a week, from 10.30 am to 1.30pm. The events will make available newspapers, books, games and jigsaws for those who attend. Refreshments including soup, cakes, tea and coffee will also be available. In addition, organised activities will be available along with upskilling opportunities.
We are looking for help to prepare the Hall for the events. This would include organising the kitchen and cleaning and painting the meeting room.
We also need volunteers to help on a rota basis to help deliver these. As well as welcoming attendees this would include making sure refreshments were ready; preparing the dining area and serving refreshments, ensuring the activities are set out, and tidying up at the close.
If you are interested in helping us, please contact secretarylauderdalecc@gmail.com
The Winter Warmers are part of the work we are doing to increase usage of Lauder Public Hall and are funded by Scottish Minister’s in conjunction with Scottish Borders Council, as lead partner for the Local Action Group.

More great news for the Public Hall
The Winter Warmers will be going ahead
As you know the LCC Public Hall Sub Group applied to the Community Led Local Development Fund for funding to establish Winter Warmers, one day a week from October 2026 to March 2027 in the Public Hall.
We are delighted to say that they have been successful in getting almost all of the funding requested. The Local Action Group (LAG) really liked our project and offered us part funding of £7291.50. The Sub Group included a sum for the installation of the projector, but the LAG did not feel that the projector set fitted with the rest of the project and did not fund that element. We will need to look elsewhere to get funding for that.
Funding for the Winter Warmers is a positive step forward in securing the future of the Public Hall and once again making it the heart of the community.

The Lauder Public Hall Steering Group met for the first time on the 5th of May. The meeting was attended by representatives from user groups and SBC/LIVE Borders. Members were updated on our journey so far and ideas shared on next steps.
The task ahead can be divided into 4 groups
- Upgrading the hall
- Increasing usage
- Decreasing costs
- Taking forward the CAT
Please click on this link to read the full minutes.
Feel free to email us if you require any additional information.
Our next meeting is on the 16th June, when representatives will have had time to consult with their groups and we can begin to plan a way forward.

For general Public Hall enquiries email: Nikkilaidlaw@liveborders1.org.uk

MAY 2026 : UPDATE
We have sent out an invitation to each group to nominate a representative to sit on the steering group. At this stage we are keen to limit membership to the key users, but will look to invite others to join the group in the future. The first meeting of the Group will be held on Tuesday 5th May 2026, in the Public Hall.
Following on from a public meeting in November Lauderdale Community Council submitted a detailed response to LiveBorders and Scottish Borders Council (SBC) re the threatened closure of our Public Hall. This was referenced during the Special Council meeting on 20th November 2025. We are delighted that SBC recommended that the Public Hall be retained with a view to it being transferred to the Community via a Community Asset Transfer by the end of March 2029.
The Public Hall Subgroup had a constructive initial meeting with LiveBorders and SBC in January to discuss the way forward. Following this we consider the best way forward is to establish a Public Hall Steering Group made up of a representative from each of the regular Hall users. The full remit of the group will be agreed at its first meeting, but its aim will be to drive forward improvements to the Hall, raise its profile and identify new users.

Within the above link and under section 2p it states;
Retain Lauder Public Hall whilst opportunities are explored to maximise usage and income generation with a view to a full community asset transfer being completed by 31 March 2029, subject to a robust and sustainable business case being presented. As this is a common good asset a further consultation would be required to comply with the principles of the law regarding common good assets at the point that any asset transfer is being considered. ‘
SCOTTISH BORDERS COUNCIL/LIVE BORDERS – JOINT TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGE PROGRAMME PROPOSALS
Thank you to everyone who came to the Lauderdale Community Council Public Hall Consultation evening on the 4th November 2025. All the information gathered on the evening will be analyzed and put in to a Report.
Lauderdale Community Council is keen to hear from as many people as possible, so, if you were unable to make the event you can email us with your thoughts or with your answers to the three questions below.
- Why you use the Hall?
- Why don’t you use the Hall?
- How can we make the Public Hall a better facility for all?
- What have you used the Public Hall for and was it a success?
Dear All,
We are writing to you on behalf of Lauder Community Council (LCC) as you are listed as the contact for the clubs you represent.
Recently an independent review was carried out on behalf of LIVE Borders which has recommended closing many venues to make the organization financially viable. Scottish Borders Council is currently consulting with the public on these proposals, which include potential closures and service changes for various community halls, museums, and leisure centres. No final decisions have been made, and the council will consider community feedback before making its final recommendations in the near future, this includes the Public Hall in Lauder.
The report will go to Council on 29th October but the Council will hold a special meeting on 20th November to discuss the full report.
I’m getting in touch about the possible closure of Lauder Public Hall, which is one of the facilities currently being reviewed.
We want to hear from local organisations, like yours, to understand how the hall is used — or why it might not be. Your feedback will help us build a clearer picture of its role in the community and explore ways to keep it open and useful. It’s important to reply even if your club/organisation is not a regular user of the Hall, as any decision about the viability of the Public Hall will impact on the other meeting facilities in the Town.
Thank you very much for your time and support.
Best regards,
Marilyn Aitkenhead & Susan Sutherland
