MAY 2026 : UPDATE
We have sent out an invitation to each group to nominate a representative to sit on the steering group. At this stage we are keen to limit membership to the key users, but will look to invite others to join the group in the future. The first meeting of the Group will be held on Tuesday 5th May 2026, in the Public Hall.
Following on from a public meeting in November Lauderdale Community Council submitted a detailed response to LiveBorders and Scottish Borders Council (SBC) re the threatened closure of our Public Hall. This was referenced during the Special Council meeting on 20th November 2025. We are delighted that SBC recommended that the Public Hall be retained with a view to it being transferred to the Community via a Community Asset Transfer by the end of March 2029.
The Public Hall Subgroup had a constructive initial meeting with LiveBorders and SBC in January to discuss the way forward. Following this we consider the best way forward is to establish a Public Hall Steering Group made up of a representative from each of the regular Hall users. The full remit of the group will be agreed at its first meeting, but its aim will be to drive forward improvements to the Hall, raise its profile and identify new users.

Special Meeting of Full Council on 20th November 2025
Within the above link and under section 2p it states;
Retain Lauder Public Hall whilst opportunities are explored to maximise usage and income generation with a view to a full community asset transfer being completed by 31 March 2029, subject to a robust and sustainable business case being presented. As this is a common good asset a further consultation would be required to comply with the principles of the law regarding common good assets at the point that any asset transfer is being considered. ‘
SCOTTISH BORDERS COUNCIL/LIVE BORDERS – JOINT TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGE PROGRAMME PROPOSALS
Thank you to everyone who came to the Lauderdale Community Council Public Hall Consultation evening on the 4th November 2025. All the information gathered on the evening will be analyzed and put in to a Report.
Lauderdale Community Council is keen to hear from as many people as possible, so, if you were unable to make the event you can email us with your thoughts or with your answers to the three questions below.
- Why you use the Hall?
- Why don’t you use the Hall?
- How can we make the Public Hall a better facility for all?
- What have you used the Public Hall for and was it a success?
Dear All,
We are writing to you on behalf of Lauder Community Council (LCC) as you are listed as the contact for the clubs you represent.
Recently an independent review was carried out on behalf of LIVE Borders which has recommended closing many venues to make the organization financially viable. Scottish Borders Council is currently consulting with the public on these proposals, which include potential closures and service changes for various community halls, museums, and leisure centres. No final decisions have been made, and the council will consider community feedback before making its final recommendations in the near future, this includes the Public Hall in Lauder.
The report will go to Council on 29th October but the Council will hold a special meeting on 20th November to discuss the full report.
I’m getting in touch about the possible closure of Lauder Public Hall, which is one of the facilities currently being reviewed.
We want to hear from local organisations, like yours, to understand how the hall is used — or why it might not be. Your feedback will help us build a clearer picture of its role in the community and explore ways to keep it open and useful. It’s important to reply even if your club/organisation is not a regular user of the Hall, as any decision about the viability of the Public Hall will impact on the other meeting facilities in the Town.
Thank you very much for your time and support.
Best regards,
Marilyn Aitkenhead & Susan Sutherland
